Black Lives Matter-Civil Rights
MAHPERD rejects all forms of bias and discrimination. Our values of diversity, inclusion and equality have always been a priority in serving our members. The senseless act of violence in the killing of George Floyd and many more in the black community by the hands of those in power has caused us to really take a look at the inequities across wealth, access to education, healthcare and the judicial system. As educators, we cannot be colorblind nor remain neutral. We need to be the catalyst for change. Hatred and racism will not be tolerated. In the name of human rights, we have a responsibility to our scholars in each and every school to seize the moment and engage in conversations that are truly transparent and uncomfortable about racism and atrocities that are commonplace. As Frederick Douglass once said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress” and in these extremely challenging times, MAHPERD knows that statements without action are hollow. We will always use our powerful voices to speak out against exclusion of people of color and other marginalized groups in our society.

It is with great sadness we inform the membership that Sheryl Hall passed away peacefully on Friday, March 6th. Sheryl was diagnosed a month ago with CJD (Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease). Her Celebration of Life will take place at a later date in April and we will be sure to let you know when we find out the details. As an executive board member for the past 15 years, Sheryl served as the Co-Awards Chair, President, for two terms, and as the Kids in Motion chairperson. She also received the MAHPERD Honor Award in 2017. We will never forget her positivity, leadership qualities and friendship, which have left a noteworthy impact on our organization. Sheryl was a person who believed in “giving back” and caring for others. Her values of kindness, generosity of spirit, thoughtfulness and hard work will never be forgotten. She was a wonderful friend who was “good to the core” and she has left a deep void within our MAHPERD family. Please remember her family and her wife Chris in your thoughts and prayers and if you so choose to do so, donations may be made to prionalliance.org in Sheryl’s memory.
