Making Sure Our Kids Have Quality Physical Education

Massachusetts, like many other states, faces a challenge. 25% of students are either overweight or obese, and 86% don’t eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. In addition, more than half do not get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity five days a week. Schools can educate students about healthy eating and being active; offer healthy food and provide opportunities for daily physical education. The Legislature has an opportunity to improve the health of our kids by taking action on critical Physical Education (PE) legislation today. The lack of physical education in schools is one of the reasons we have a problem with not only the health of our kids but also of their academic success. No matter how well teachers are prepared to teach, no matter what accountability measures are put in place, no matter what governing structures are established for schools, educational progress will be profoundly limited if students are not motivated and able to learn. Healthier students are better learners.
