We are conducting a new sport sampling program as a way to increase physical literacy in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and looking for two physical activity instructors. This project involves a community-based sport sampling program, which is a program that engages children in a variety of sports, for children ages 6-12. We are conducting this study to see if a sport sampling program is feasible and effective in getting children to increase their movement skills and physical competence, which are components of physical literacy.
The program will start in mid-January and will run for 5 months, with sessions lasting 1 hour for each age group (6-8 and 9-12). In each of the sport sessions, there will be an interactive greeting facilitated by the instructors, a warm-up involving a low-organized game/activity, activity stations and/or small group games, and free play. Children will learn and practice different motor skills like jumping, catching, throwing and kicking. The activities will be centered around 4-5 different sports like soccer, baseball and basketball and each sport will be run for 4-5 weeks.
The program will take place at the Waltham YMCA and the study is being conducted by Dr. Heidi Stanish from University of Massachusetts Boston.
